Key Ingredients
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a polysaccharide compound that occurs naturally in every tissue of the body, with the highest concentrations in the skin, joints, and cartilage. It is the natural gel between skin cells that is able to hold up to 1000 times its own weight in moisture, making it the most hydrating water-soluble compound known for use on human skin. As we age skin loses hyaluronic acid, resulting in a diminished ability to retain moisture. Applying hyaluronic acid topically incorporates it into the intercellular matrix forming a visco-elastic network that both hydrates the skin while working to smooth out fine lines.
The protein peptides in sesame have unique properties for skincare products. Research has demonstrated that sesame proteins have an anti-wrinkle and tightening effect on the skin when topically applied. Unlike other peptides that work directly to stimulate collagen synthesis in the skin, sesame peptides form a network inside the epidermis that provides both an elastic tightening effect as well as lasting moisture. Though this effect is temporary it certainly is useful in products that aim to work rapidly to provide anti-aging effects while other active ingredients restore the skin's collagen/elastin network over time. Unlike some "instant tightening" ingredients used on the market, when sesame peptides are used in a precise concentration they are absorbed deep enough that they won't leave a film on the skin while still providing supplemental elasticity to facial structures.
Shiitake mushrooms impart several benefits. The aforementioned AHCC/beta-glucan is an excellent moisturizer and plays a strong role in the synthesis of new collagen fibers that reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The L-ergothioneine compound found naturally in shiitake mushrooms is a powerful antioxidant, and the kojic acid compound in them are established by several clinical studies to brighten skin by lessening hyperpigmentation over time. Shiitake mushrooms are also rich in eight essential amino acid proteins, lignans, vitamins (A, several B varieties, C, and D), potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc. So shiitake mushrooms are literally nutritious food for the skin.
Lavender has been use medicinally for soothing headaches, treating insect bites, and in aromatherapy for relaxation and calming of nerves. In skincare formulas it is highly effective as an anti-inflammatory treatment for irritated and inflamed skin. It’s also highly effective against acne due to lavender’s antiseptic properties and is often used conjunction with witch hazel extract in natural astringent products. These with sensitive skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea often find lavender to be beneficial in relieving the redness and itchiness that can come from these conditions.
