How to Turn a Watering Can Into a Planter

Galvanized watering cans have a tendency to become rusty and leaky over the years. When this happens, consider turning the watering cans into a planter rather than tossing them out. They look really cute with flowers spilling out the sides and turning the cans into a planter is a great way to recycle.

If you don't have an old watering can on hand, you can often find them for a reasonable price at swap meets, flea markets and garage sales. Don't worry if the bottoms are a little rusty; that will just make it easier to put in drainage holes!

Even if the can is already a little leaky, it is important to add drainage holes to the bottom, because plants grow best in well-drained soil. To add the holes, fit a power drill with a one-fourth-inch bit designed to drill through metal (like a titanium oxide bit). Flip the can upside down on a work bench or table and drill holes all over the bottom in a grid pattern (space the holes about 3 inches apart).

Once you've got the drainage holes in place you can fill the watering can up with potting mix. Be sure to leave a 2-inch space between the top of the soil and the rim of the can (this ensures you'll have room to water your plants). Before planting, pre-moisten the soil by adding water and mixing it around until it has the same moisture level as a damp, wrung-out sponge.

You can plant whatever you like in the can, but I think they look especially cute planted up with herbs or with trailing geraniums spilling out the side. The cans tend to dry out fairly quickly, so be sure to check the soil's moisture level every day and water as needed.
