Active Ingredients

Transexamic Acid

It lightens the pigmentation of scars, sun overexposure, acne, melasma, age spots, and skin spots related to medications and hormonal changes. Tranexamic acid has been found to be the most effective compound for overall skin whitening and lightening pigmentation and dark spots. It circumvents the melanin affected area and reduces the hyperpigmentation activity from the edges to the middle. It works from the outer edges of the pigmented area towards the middle until it dissapears. It effectively reduces and prevents darkening of the skin due to sun exposure and aging by inhibiting tyrosinase production.

Pomegranate

It is a fruit is filled with beneficial phytonutrients, including vitamin B5, vitamin C, catechins, gallocatechins, prodelphinidins, delphinidin, cyanidin, pelargonidin, ellagitannins, and several other strong antioxidant compounds in the polyphenol, anthocyanin, flavonoid, and tannin families. The ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) rating of the fruit varies according to variety, with the darker red varieties demonstrating the highest ability to neutralize free radicals in the body and skin.

In skincare formulations the extract of the pomegranate fruit and the oil of the pomegranate seed have been shown to have excellent free radical neutralizing properties and strong anti-inflammatory benefits. It is an excellent treatment for soothing sunburns and there is laboratory evidence that it may stimulate the synthesis of collagen production in the skin. Pomegranate seed oil has excellent moisturizing properties and is perfect for use on mature, dry skin. The oil contains a high amount of conjugated fatty acids, especially punicic acid (which constitutes 62% of the oil content), which have anti-inflammatory and restorative properties. Other factions of the oil include: 15% puninic acid isomers, 10% linoleic acid, 8% oleic acid, 3% palmitic acid, and roughly 2% various other antioxidant constituents.

Iris Flower

It has been demonstrated in clinical studies to reduce the depth of wrinkles while improving skin hydration and elasticity for an overall improvement in skin tone. This has led researchers to classify the extract of the iris flower as a revitalizing anti-aging ingredient. It is rich in natural isoflavones phytocompounds that work in the skin by stimulating hormone receptor sites to compensate for decreased metabolic activity due to aging. They, along with other phytonutrients in the extract of the iris flower, fortify the dermis by limiting the degradation of structural proteins.

Wheat germ oil

It is the natural oil extracted from the germ of the seed cereal of wheat. The germ of the seed is the embryo, or reproductive part, usually obtained after milling of the grain. The germ forms only 3% of the weight of a wheat grain, but contains about 25% of the protein, vitamins and minerals. Because of this concentration of nutrients in the germ part of the plant seed the oil is a source of several essential nutrients, including a high content of Vitamin E as well as Vitamin A, Vitamin D, folate (folic acid), phosphorus, thiamin, zinc and magnesium, as well as essential fatty acids (including omega-3). Wheat germ oil is moisturizing to the skin and has been shown to soothe irritation and redness, including that related to eczema conditions, while promoting the regeneration of skin cells.

Clinical Study

Pigmentation

Kondou et al. have published results from a clinical study examining the effects of a tranexamic acid (TA) emulsion applied topically to melasma and freckles. The study involved 33 patients, 25 with melasma and 8 with freckles, who applied the Transexamic acid solution for five to eighteen weeks, after which they were examined by a dermatologist.

Researchers found that the Transexamic Acid solution had improved the pigmentation in 20 patients with melasma (80%) and 6 subjects (75%) with freckles. No side effect was recognized and thus Transexamic acid was deemed safe for topical use. In regard to changes over the course of the study, marked improvement was observed within eight weeks for melasma and within 12 weeks for freckles; therefore, improvement was considered to require at least two months of topical application.

The authors concluded the Transexamic acid solution was an effective cosmetic skin lightening solution that provided a whitening effect on melasma and freckles by blocking the synthesis of melanin. It also stopped the reoccurence of new pigmentation spots and freckles.

Melasma

In an open pilot study, intradermal microinjection of tranexamic acid was given to 100 women with melasma for 12 weeks. The treatment was well tolerated, and 76.5% of the subjects reported fair lightening of their melasma.

Bleeding and skin diseases

TA has been used clinically for over 30 years to treat abnormal bleeding, and skin conditions such as eczema, hives, drug-induced irritation, and toxicodermia, via internal administration, and also orally to treat itching, swelling, and erythema. It is a representative ω-amino aci-type anti-plasmin agent that has a highly specific action on the fibrinolytic system, blocking the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin by inhibiting PA action through the formation of a reversible complex with plasminogen. TA is also thought to form a reversible complex with plasmin, inhibiting the reaction with fibrin.
