Hence, research was carried out in the formulation of Noni products suitable for different segments of society. The research included ingredient formulation, proximate and component analysis, sensory testing for organoleptic, properties, shelf life studies and packaging development, a host of products was produced from this research namely, Silver Noni as a family supplement, Golden Noni as an energy supplement, Nona Manja for ladies and Malaysian Noni as a food supplement. All these products have already been marketed by OGSB.
Abstract of Pre-Clinical Trial by International Medical University Clinical School, Seremban, Malaysia
Background: The protective role of mengkudu juice against hypertension, diabetes mellitus and cardiac disease is uncertain although it is widely claimed to be effective and its consumption is almost worldwide.
Objective: To evaluate the tolerability of consuming mengkudu juice and its effects on healthy subjects in a Malaysian population, with special reference to the short term and mid term effects of mengkudu juice on heart rate, blood pressure and blood glucose.
Design: Cross sectional study.
Setting: Research and Consultancy Centre, IMU Clinical School in Seremban from July 2003 to October 2003.
Subjects: 53 healthy male and female volunteers aged from 12-65. We studied basal blood pressure, heart rate, fasting and 2 hours post prandial blood glucose and electrocardiographs.
Main outcome measures: Changes in the biological parameters were evaluated by repeated measurements upon initiation of the study, 2hours post prandial and after 3 weeks of ingestion of mengkudu juice.
Results: Subjects placed in the control group did not reveal statistically significant changes in blood sugar levels, heart rate and blood pressure. Consumption of mengkudu juice was associated with statistically significant reductions in post-prandial blood sugar, systolic blood pressure and heart rate.
Conclusion: The data suggests a potential association between consumption of mengkudu juice and reduction in post-prandial blood sugar, diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure and heart rate.
Currently, OGSB is conducting research on formulation of multiple herbal mixtures as a food supplement for children and other segments of society. In future, OGSB intend to venture into the field of nanotechnology for Noni Product and other food supplement. Biotechnology procedures will also be applied to enhance the effectiveness of these food supplements.
OGSB R& D Department is also in collaboration with the Department of Food Technology, University Putra Malaysia. This given access to formulation, sensory and analytical research of OGSB products and future projects.
